Austin, Texas — Weather Paintings
The work begins with a choice of place. The environment does the rest. Each location becomes a collaborator: its moisture, heat, the salt or dryness of its air, the quality of its light on a cloudy day versus a clear one. These forces translate themselves directly onto the surface. Rust is the pigment. The tarp is the canvas. What comes back to the studio is an artifact created by the atmosphere itself. A surface that holds a stretch of time of a place.

Each piece is named for the dates it was exposed and the place it was created. The date beneath every work marks that span across a single year. Some took most of a year; others, only days.

About & contact
Atmosphere Marks.
We tend to treat the world as something happening to us: the weather, the seasons, the constant fact of change, all of it a force to guard against. That instinct isn't wrong, but we've built lives of so much protection and so little contact that our relationship to the world has narrowed.
I make my work to loosen that grip. I take the atmosphere, vast, sublime, and indifferent, the very thing we insulate ourselves from, and try to turn it into something welcoming rather than something to survive.
Each work takes its name from the time and place it was made. A date, a season, a place on a map calls on the viewers memory, a weather you have stood in before. The work is an invitation to reconsider your own relationship to a world that was never within your control, and to find belonging.
